Loy Kratong
01/10/2009 - 30/11/2009
Place: Bangkok
Traditionally held in November, Loy Kratong is timed for the end of the rainy season when Thai's give thanks to the Phra Mae Khong Kaen (water spirit) for the use of the water and to apologies for any misuse of the water during the main rice growing season. "Loy" means "to float" and "Kratong" is a small raft traditionally made from a cross section cut from a banana tree and decorated with banana leaves, flowers, joss sticks and a candle. Thai people decend all rivers, lakes and ponds around the country to light and float their kratong in an effort to pay respect to Phra Mae Khong Kaen and leave any bad luck or bad feelings behind them and pray for good fortune in the future.
