Songkran

12/04/2011 - 14/04/2011
Place: Bangkok

Originally the date was set by the astrologists, Songkran, was the official New Years Day in the Thai calendar. It is a time for cleansing and renewal. Traditionally Thai's visit their local temple to pray and make merit by offering alms to the monks.

In the homes scented water is used to cleanse Buddha images by pouring it over them, the scented water is then collected and used to pay respect to the elder members of the family by pouring it gently over their head or shoulders.

These days following the more traditional activities, people hit the streets and a nationwide water fight erupts. To venture outside during songkran is to ensure you will get wet, in typical Thai style, it's all about having fun and bringing in the new year in style.
