Useful Tips
Here’s 10 Bangkok travel tips to help make the best of your travel to Bangkok:
1. Best time of the year to travel is December/January, then November/February.
2. Keep healthy. Ensure you get all relevant vaccinations before travelling, and be wary of dehydration in the Bangkok heat, especially if you are partying the nights away (see below).
3. To check out the nightlife head to Patpong, Khao San Road or Suan Lum Night Bazaar.
4. Respect local customs, especially in temples (such as removing shoes and wearing adequate clothing).
5. Brush up on your negotiating skills. Bargaining at the markets is not just a game here, its part of life. Keep a smile on your face though and bring plenty of low denomination notes.
6. Never throw money or criticise the much loved Thai monarchy.
7. To get around, the BTS Skytrain takes people above the traffic chaos to various corners of the city. Tuk-tuks are a cheap and fun way to get around, and there is also the underground metro, river and canal boats, and 30,000 metered taxis.
8. Be aware of Jem scams. The rule in general is that if it's too good to be true, it most likely is.
9. Want an authentic, affordable Thai meal? Ditch the tourist districts and eat at some small local eateries or markets. US$5 for a meal and drink in local jaunts is living large!
10. And finally, don’t go for a swim in the Chao Phraya River (see point 2 above), but the floating markets are well worth a visit
